VAOS Meeting Wednesday Nov. 7th at 7pm

Location: Venice Community Center (doors open at 6:30pm)
Speaker: Fred Clarke – Sunset Valley Orchids
Topic: Catasetum Species, Hybrid and their Culture

Catasetums are from the Tribe Cymbidieae. Individually, it has been considered an orchid oddity, or “botanical”, of interest mainly to the seriously addicted enthusiast. These plants have a brief deciduous period in winter, when the plants need a definite dry rest period bordering on neglect. These robust orchids are native to lowland tropical forests in Central and South America and are usually grown in warm or intermediate conditions.

Commercially, Catasetum, have occupied a small market niche on the edge of a sea of Cymbidiums, Cattleyas, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobiums, Epidendrums, and so on. Until recently, they have not attracted much attention from hybridizers, but in the past several years some spectacular hybrids have been produced, receiving great acclaim and an increasingly large collection of awards from the American Orchid Society.

This talk will feature a widescreen computer slide show on some of the species, new hybrids and plant culture of Catasetums. The presenter will be Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids in Vista.

Fred Clarke has been growing orchids for 35 years and has been hybridizing for 35 of those years. With over 32 years as a professional grower and manager in the horticultural industry, Fred applies these skills at his orchid nursery; Sunset Valley Orchids, located in San Diego, California.

He is a passionate orchid grower whose curiosity in orchids is broad and varied. Although developing Cattleya hybrids has been his sustaining interest, he is also actively creating new Australian Dendrobiums and Paphiopedilum hybrids plus some others to be named if they work out!

His pioneering work in Catasetum intergeneric hybrids led to the development of several notable hybrids, most recently the grex, Fredclarkeara After Dark, which produced “the blackest flower ever witnessed”. This grex has received eight FCC’s and over 50 awards worldwide.

Fred is an Accredited Judge in the Pacific South Judging Region. His plants have received hundreds of quality awards from the American Orchid Society.

Fred will have plants for sale. You may pre-order from his website via email www.sunsetvalleyorchids.com with a 10% discount and free shipping. Pick up and pay for your order at our meeting.

VAOS Meeting Wednesday Sept. 5th at 7pm

Location: Venice Community Center (doors open at 6:30pm)
Speaker: Brian Monk, Blu Llama Orchids
Topic: Paphiopedilums Orchids

Our guest speaker is Brian Monk of Blu Llama Orchids Inc. in Naples, Florida. Brian will discuss Paphiopedilums orchids and how to grow them successfully.

Brian Monk was born in Milton, Florida in 1969. Shortly after his birth, Brian’s family moved to Charleston, West Virginia where he spent the next 18 years. As a young man, Brian’s intense passion for nature led to his profession and his many hobbies including bird-watching, orchid growing and natural history. In 1992, Brian received his B.S., cum laude, from Hampden Sydney College in Virginia followed by a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Virginia Tech in 1997.

Brian started growing and hybridizing orchids in his backyard, but this has expanded to 4000 square feet of greenhouse space. He will grow anything green, but focuses on his hybridizing projects, which include the development of multi-floral white and pink Paphiopedilums, warmth-tolerant red Oncidiinae, and a standard pink Cattleya with an all-white lip. Accompanied by his wife and inspired by his orchids, Brian continues to pursue and perfect his orchid culture and photographic skills. Brian’s photography has won awards online, in the International Orchid Show, and the World Orchid Conference.
