Show Table February 2006

Monthly meetings include a show table of members’ plants. Six ribbons are awarded each month: four awards are selected by an alternating team of three VAOS member judges. These awards are: one for Best Species, and a First, Second and Third place award to any plant, a Speaker’s Choice award and the VAOS members vote on the plant for Members’ Choice. There was no speaker for the February meeting. The following section describes each of these awards for February. Plants are named as presented with minor editing corrections. Pot. Millennium Gold 5 First Place: Pot. Millennium Gold

Grower: Bill Timm

The five bright yellow flowers drew the judges attention to this clone of Pot. Millennium Gold. It is a cross of Pot. Frank Gilmore x Blc. Kure Beach registered in 1999.

SLC Tutankamen 'Pop' Second Place: Slc. Tutankamen ‘Pop’ AM/AOS

Grower: Chris Simco

A cross of C. Chocolate Drop by Slc. MaeHawkins, the five flowers on two inflorescences exhibited the intense color and waxy texture expected in C. Chocolate Drop offspring. Althought the cross was registered in 1983, it did nott receive any awards until 2002 – no doubt a remake of the original hybrid.

BLC Izumi Charm Third Place: Blc. Izumi Charm ‘Grace’ HCC/AOS

Grower: Ted and Marty Kellogg

A plant with eight well-formed flowers on 3 inflorescences. This is a cross of Blc. Love Sound by Lc. Meldoy Fair. that was registered in 2003. The clone ‘Grace’ earned its HCC/AOS award a few days later at the Venice Orchid Society Show.

Ludisia discolor Members Choice and Species of the Month: Ludisia discolor

Grower: Margaret Cullen

Ludisia discolor is grown for its folliage. Growing an outstanding plant requires continued maintenance – no insect eaten leaves, lush growth, and of course, no residue on the leaves to distract from the natural beauty. Margaret’s plant with over 70 inflorescences was an example of outstanding culture.

Judges were Howard Taylor, Lindalee Anderson, Yvonne Renzi.

DSC_0008.JPG First Place and Members’ Choice: Cym. (Kinkazan x Tsurug Awa Bijin) ‘Purple Temple’

Grower: Noreen Chervinski

This unregistered hybrid presented 6 upright inflorescences each with 16-20 flowers, and three other inflorescences were in an early growth stage. The impressive display of purple flowers caught the attention of members.

A web serach finds that this clone is available from several orchid growers, but neither it, nor its parents, are registered hybrids.

Grower: Bob Hague

A display of 8 intensely colored flowers on four inflorescences. This hybrid of C. Moscombe by Lc. Wayndora was registered in 1999. Lc. Wayndora has been a parent in many of these uniquely colored hybrids.

Grower: John Masters

A nicely grown plan twith 10 flowers and four buds. It is a hybrid of Pot. Twentyfour Carat by Sc. Beaufort that was registered in 1990. The grex has earned eleven quality awards and is the parent to many mini cat hybrids.

DSC_0017.JPG Best Species and Speaker’s Choice: C. percivaliana

Grower: John Masters

Fourteen flowers on five inflorescences made an outstanding display onthis Cattleya species. The species is from Venezuela where it grows on rocks in full sun. There are several color forms in cultivtion. It usually has a rich gold color as part of the lip, and it blooms near the Christmas season.

Judges were Richard Amos, Phyllis Walton aand Mickey Carnell.

SLC Bright Angel x LLyewellyn2 First Place: Slc. Bright Angel x Blc. Lewellyn

Grower: Ted and Marty Kellogg

This unregisterd hybrid of H & R nurseries was purchased as a 2″seedling in 2002. The plant blooms twice a year with the brightest red color occurring during the winter months. The flowers have a natural spread of 8 cm.

BLC liz wright x fred stewart Second Place: Blc. Liz Wright x Blc. Fred Stewart

Grower: Richard Amos

The lineage of this plant is a who’s who of large purple Cattleya hybrids: Blc. Memoria Crispen Rosales, Lc. Elizabeth Off and Blc. Norman’s Bay are grandparents. This plant had seven flowers on three inflorescences. The dark purple color of the sepals and petals was evenly and deeply saturated and enhanced by the rich, red purple lip.

Blc Simba's Song 1 Third Place: Blc. Simba’s Song

Grower: Roy Klinger

This hybrid of Bc. Maikai by L. purpurata was registered in 2002 and was made by Quest orchids. There were 16 inflorescences, each carried about seven flowers. Blc. Simba’s Song has the growth and flowering habit of Bc. Maikai with larger flowers.

Angraceum distictum Species of the Month: Angraecum distichum ‘Marya’ CCM/AOS

Grower: Richard Amos

Richard had shown this plant in November 2004 on the society plant table and it won Species of the Month. This year it was even more impressive. The plant was shown at the Monthly AOS judging at Orlando in December 2005 where it earned Richard a CCM (Certificate of Cultural Merit), scoring 86 points. AOS judges counted over 500 flowers on 150 growths.

Crphm. Emly Siegerst 'Molly-Jack' CCM/AOS Members Choice: Crphm. Emly Siegerst ‘Molly Jack’ CCM/AOS

Grower: Monroe Kokin

Monroe showed this plant one year ago at the AOS judging in Tampa where it earned Monroe a CCM award with 81 points. At that time it had 77 flowers and 37 buds on 57 inflorescences. This flowering was even more impressive on a plant in perfect condition. It is a hybrid of Cirr. Elizabeth Ann x Bulb. lasiochilum registered in 1989.

Judges were Bill Caldwell, Katie Caldwell, Bill Fender, Bob Hague.
