A miniature species from Asia that blooms in the late summer. The color maybe predominately green, yellow or orange. The flowers form a dense ball and are held close to the stem of the plant.

First Place : Paph Honey

Grower: Dorothy Funderburg

A gorgeous and well grown Paphiopedilum. This is a cross of papiopedilum ( primulinium x phillipense var roebellii). We were fortunate that this plant chose to be in peak bloom for our meeting. Dorothy said she has cared for this plant for many years. It is one of her favorites.

Second Place : Bulbophyllum Star of Sumatra

Grower: Monroe Kokin

This beautiful flower definitely caught the attention of the judges. This is a hybrid of Bulbo. sumatranum and echinolabium. RHS do not recognize Bulbo sumatranum as a separate species but treats it as a synonym to Bulbophyllum lobbii var. breviflorumhe. The flower is about 3″ across.

Third: Paravanda Mecca’s Candy ‘Sweet Tooth’

Grower: Carol Wood

It’s wonderful to see something new at every meeting. This cross of Paraphalaenopsis x Vanda teres is something many of us have never seen. This clone has beautiful lavender flowers with a brownish red lip and was awarded HCC/AOS with 77 points.

Best Species and Speaker’s Choice: :  Dockrillia wassellii

Grower: Roy Klinger

Dockrillia wassellii is a dendrobium species found in Australia. This plant has small but attractive inflorescences of pure white. The foliage is attractive as well, resembling small cacti. With a plant table loaded with attractive species, this plant was well grown and well bloomed indeed to attract the attention of both the judges and the speaker.

Show Table May 2010

These awards are: one for Best Species, and a First, Second and Third place award to any plant, a Speaker’s Choice award and the VAOS members vote on the plant for Members’ Choice. First Place and Members’ Choice: Cattlianthe Jewel Box ‘Scheherazade’ AM/AOS

Grower: Bill Timm

A classic red Cattleya, this hybrid was registered in 1962 and is a cross of Guarianthe aurantiaca x Cattleya Anzac. The first award to a clone was in 1964. The ‘Scheherazade’ clone was granted an HCC in 1969 and the AM was earned in 1971. The plant was cloned and widely distributed. It has proven to be a vigorous grower earning 14 AOS cultural awards, once with 450 flowers.

Second Place and Speaker’s Choice: Doriteanopsis Little Gem Stripes

Grower: Bob Wallace

A very well grown, floriferous plant of this multifloral Phalaenopsis. The clonal name was not given, but it looks at lot like the clone ‘OX 1425’ which has an AM award from the AOS. The cross was registered in 1997.

Third: Epicattleya (Guaricyclia) Charlie Brown ‘Red Star’

Grower: Bob Wallace

Many bright red flowers made this the third place winner. The name maybe be problematic. There are two Charlie Brown’s in the Cattleya hybrid group. The one named above and Enanthleya Charlie Brown. While their parentage differs, both can produce offspring similar to the one shown.

Best Species: Dendrobium lindleyi

Grower: Carol Wood

Carol has owned this plant for six years and this is the fifth time it has bloomed. Each successive blooming has produced a larger ball of flowers which last about a week. The species is also known as Den. aggregatum, an older name that was applied in error to this species.

18 plants from 8 exhibitors were shown.
