July 2011 Plant Table

Plant Table Awards, July 11, 2011

In July we were visitors at the Englewood Society. The following are awards won by VAOS members at that meeting.

First Place: Dale Richter Dtps. Queen Beer

Grower: Dale Richter
A lovely dark-pink, table-size Doritaenopsis earned the first place ribbon.  While it was exhibited under the name Queen Bee, the correct name is Queen Beer.  It is a cross of Doritis pulcherrima and Phalaenopis Meteor.  Meteor is a standard form pink Phalaenopsis. The summer blooming is the result of the Doritis pulcherrima parent.

Second Place: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Robert and Michael

Grower: Ted Kellogg

This plant was from a Christmas Party distribution by VAOS.  The cross of C. Aloha Case by Rhyncholealiocattleya Hunting Island was registered by Carmela Orchids in 2007.  The Aloha Case has a strong influence of C. walkeriana in its background that contributes to the flat form of the flower, the Hunting Island has Rlc. Oconee in its background that contributes to the intensity of color and the shape of the lip.

Third Place: Podangis dactyloceras

Grower: Ted Kellogg

This is Ted’s favorite orchid.  It has crystalline white flowers arranged in an ‘exploding fireworks’ form and blooms in the summer.  The species is widely distributed in West Africa.  It is the only member of the Genus and is related to the Angraecums and Aerangis.

Speaker’s and Members’ Choice: Rhyncholaeliocattleya Hawaiian Passion ‘Carmela’ HCC/AOS

Grower: Bob Wallace

This large plant had over twenty-five blossoms that drew the attention of the Members and Speaker.  It is a cross of C. Wailea and Rlc. Waikiki Gold and was registered in 1991.  Carmela is the only awarded clone; it received the HCC award in 2004.
