Show Table January 2009

Monthly meetings include a show table of members’ plants. Six ribbons are awarded each month: four awards are selected by an alternating team of VAOS members. These awards are: one for Best Species, and a First, Second and Third place award to any plant, a Speaker’s Choice award and the VAOS members vote on the plant for Members’ Choice. First Place: Phaiocalanthe Kryptonite ‘Blood Bath’ HCC/AOS

Grower: Carol Liddy

This is a hybrid of Calanthe Rozel x Phaius tankervilleae registered in 2000 by E.F.G. Orchids. E.F. G. Orchids has developed this line of breeding and offers clonal propagation of many outstanding clones. Carol’s plant was spotlessly grown and very well flowered.

Second Place and Members’ Choice: Rsc. Lucky Man x C. Nestrasiri Beauty ‘Quest’

Grower: Bob Wallace

The intense, intersting colors of this hybrid caught the eye of both the judges and the members. The flowers had exceptional substance.

Third Place: Brassavola nodosa?

Grower: Joe Crook

This is an abnormal blooming of a B. nodosa that has bloomed many time for Joe. This time, all of the initial inflorescences died just as the buds were becoming visible. Each inflorescence then put out several short branches carrying 3 to 4 flowers each. The flowers were smaller than usual, but created an outstanding display.

Species of the Month: Prosthechea cochleata

Grower: Bill Timm

This Florida native species is found throughout the Carribean, Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America. Forms known for the the number of open flowers, size of flowers and even the number of pollina are found in specific locals throughout its range.

Speakers Choice: Rlc.Arthur Tanner’s Elena Armando.

Grower: Shirley Hoffman

This is a hybrid of Rlc. Llano and C. Ruth Gee ‘Willikers’. Plants of this cross were distrubuted to VAOS members at the Christmas meeting several years ago and are now returning to the plant table.

Judges were Toni Marie, Sue Guagliano, Katie Caldwell and Barbara Rieniets.

December 2008 Plant Table

First Place: Blc. Mahina Yahiro ‘Ulii’ AM/AOS x C. Sans Souci ‘Classic’

Grower: Bob Wallace

A wonderful arrangement of six flowers set this plant above all others on the plant table. It is the result of breeding a large pink to a large white.

Second Place and Members’ Choice: Rsc. Kat Red Panda ‘Dragon Cat’

Grower: Jane Camarota

A striking contrast of red tips to the petals and lips on a green flower. The color pattern can be traced back five generations to C. intermedia.

Third Place: Brassavola Little Stars

Grower: Dale Richter

Brassavola Little Stars is a hybrid of Brassavola nodosa x Brassavola subulifolia registered by Stewart’s in the 1980’s. Clones containing several hundred flowers have received cultural awards.

Species of the Month: Laelia anceps

Grower: Ted and Marty Kellogg

This is a seedling of two named but unawarded clones, “Last Hurrah’ x ‘Excalibur’. It had five flowers on two inflorescences.

October 2008 Plant Table

First Place: Bulbophyllum Fantasia

Grower: Richard Amos

This hybrid of B. Fascination x B. fascinator was registered in 1997. Richard has grown a large plant that had 80-100 inflorescences.

Second Place: Aliceara Memoria Jay Yamada ‘Kauai’

Grower: Sharon and Carl Ivanik

This hybrid of Brassidium Kenneth Bivin by Miltassia Aztec was registered in 1999. The nicley held and formed flowers earned the ribbon. Various pictures of ‘Kauai’ forms exist and the name may reference a source rather than a clone.

Third Place: Debndrobium Emma Lai

Grower: Carol Wood

This appears to be an unregistered hybrid of the dendrobium phalaenopsis group. It was very floriferous, each cane producing about 6 inflorescences.

Species of the Month: Renthenera matutina

Grower: Roy Klinger

A well-flowered single inflorescence of this speices from Malaya, Sumatra, Java, Boreno and the Phillipines was described in 1833.

Members Choice: Dendrobium Salaya Red

Grower: Dale Richter

A brightly colored denbrobium phalaenopsis type hybrid with flares on the petals. Parents are not known – web page references indicate that this is a trade name for an unregistered hybrid. It was Dale’s first ribbon award at the plant table.

Judges were Ted and Marty Kellogg.
